SYSTEM OVERVIEW Below is a basic layout of a typical SPS Installation
Solar Photovoltaic/Wind/Micro-Hydro Systems are small scale power generator stations. Following is an overview and brief description of the main components that make up a renewable energy power generating system. Solar modules, wind generators and micro hydro generators are charging sources, they create DC voltage and current, which is regulated for charging batteries. A regulator controls the amount of voltage and current to maintain a battery bank at its optimum level, therefore maintaining maximum efficiency and battery life. A regulator prevents overcharging of the battery bank resulting in reduced battery life. The battery bank is the heart of the system, batteries are charged and discharged daily, this is called a cycle. Battery life depends on how many times the battery bank is cycled at a certain percentage of discharge per day. DC Power is stored in batteries. DC loads, through circuit protection can be used for Extra low voltage lighting, refrigeration pumping and other appliances. An inverter converts DC voltage and current into 240V 50 Hz AC Sinewave power, equal to the supply authority electricity grid. Any appliances connected to mains power can be used on a sinewave inverter. Lighting, Computers, TV's, Microwave Ovens, Washing Machines, refrigeration and general kitchen appliances all operate efficiently through a 240V 50Hz sinewave inverter. A battery charger converts 240V AC from a back up generator into extra low voltage DC used to charge a battery bank. A battery charger is used to make up any shortfall of power from renewable energy charging sources. An example would be where successive overcast days reduces the solar array output. A battery charger is used for equalizing the battery bank assuring that sulfation and stratification which can reduce the battery bank life is eliminated. This is also known as gassing which is important for maximum battery life. Circuit protection in the form of fusing, circuit breakers and safety switches are used to protect both property and persons from fire and electrocution.
